I am not naturally organized. What!?! Why would anyone hire an organizer who isn’t organized in her very soul?!? Because I know how it is, and I know what it means to maintain organization even when it doesn’t come naturally. I LOVE organizational things; bins and baskets, pantry organizers that promise a life perfectly organized with the purchase of this wonderful magical food storage container! But the truth is, you don’t need more bins and baskets and promises of organization, you need less stuff.
After helping two parents downsize and move a few times, and helping my husband clean out his mother’s house, I had a realization - this can be easier, and frankly more fulfilling. I was inspired by a book, The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, which encourages decluttering in the later stages of life.
There is a way to ‘curate’ your non-monetary valuables (your keepsakes) to enjoy them. This isn’t about getting rid of everything, this isn’t about living a minimalistic life - I love stuff! I love seeing the objects that remind me of good times. But, if they are buried under layers of other objects, or they are covered in dust, the memory isn’t being honored.
Next I realized that to make these keepsakes interesting and valuable to those left behind, context needs to be given. Handing someone a blanket and saying “grandma made this’ is very different then putting it in a keepsake box with Grandma’s story and presenting it as a gift to the next generation.
‘Death cleaning’ is about LIFE and living. It’s about elevating your things from ‘stuff’ to ‘treasures’. By decluttering, you can get rid of the bulk and make room to cherish the memories.
First, we'll talk on the phone so I can begin to understand what you need. Then, I'll come over to look at your organization project. Once we agree that we're going to work together, we'll figure out a schedule and timeline with appropriate expectations of the length of the job - a room might take two visits, a whole house could take two weeks (or more!). I do have a contract for us to both sign, and then we are on our way to getting you organized!
Some projects I may be able to work alone. I can bring you in to sort through and declutter once things have been brought under control. Some projects I may need you to work with me. For example, if you have a specialty hobby (my husband builds remote control cars), I may not be able to sort and label those components without your help. We'll discuss these options when I visit.
I have a four hour minimum per job, six hour maximum per day.
Please note: I do not offer cleaning services.
